What this trial is testing
This study is testing Intestinal ultrasound (IUS) (a diagnostic test) and Standard of care to improve how care is delivered. Condition(s) listed: Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Crohn Disease and Colitis, Ulcerative.
Participants are assigned to groups by chance (randomized).
It is open-label: participants know what they are receiving.
This study does not use drug-development phases (it may test a device, diet, procedure, app, or care approach).
Who can join
- Ages 18 and older
- Any sex
Some of the main requirements, copied from the record:
- Diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease for more than 2 months
- Age 18 years or older
- Undergoing endoscopy at enrollment for assessment of disease severity
There are also 4 reasons someone might not be able to join (exclusion criteria). Only the trial team can confirm whether you qualify.
What's involved
- About 137 participants are expected to take part.
- The study has 2 groups.
- Start date: 2026-03-25.
- Main results expected around 2028-02 (estimate from the record).
- 1 study site listed (1 marked recruiting) in Thailand.
Groups in this study
- Standard of care plus intestinal ultrasound (listed as: experimental group)
- Standard of care alone (listed as: active comparator group)
Main thing being measured
- Proportion of participants with a change in treatment (48 weeks)
In the researchers’ words
This randomized controlled trial evaluates whether adding point-of-care intestinal ultrasound (IUS) to standard of care changes clinical management in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Adult patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis undergoing colonoscopy for disease assessment are randomized 1:1 to standard of care plus IUS at every visit, or standard of care alone, and followed for 48…
Words you might see
- Randomized: participants are put into groups by chance, like a coin flip.
- Colonoscopy: a camera exam of the large intestine (colon).
- Endoscopy: a camera exam inside the digestive tract.
- Biologic: a medicine made from living cells, usually given by injection or infusion.

Questions to ask your doctor and the trial team
- Am I likely to qualify, given my health history?
- What would I have to do, and how often would I need to visit?
- Could I get a placebo? What happens to my current treatment?
- What are the possible risks and benefits?
- Are travel or other costs covered?
- What happens after the trial ends?

Interventions
- Intestinal ultrasound (IUS) (Diagnostic Test)
Point-of-care intestinal ultrasound performed at every study visit by a physician certified by the International Bowel Ultrasound Group (IBUS). The examination takes approximately 15 minutes and requires no fasting or bowel preparation. Bowel wall thickness, color Doppler signal, and mesenteric fat hypertrophy are assessed. The physician performing the examination is blinded to the blood and stool… - Standard of care (Other)
Standard of care assessment and management of inflammatory bowel disease, including clinical disease activity scores (partial Mayo/PRO-2 for ulcerative colitis, or Harvey-Bradshaw Index/PRO-2 for Crohn's disease), complete blood count, C-reactive protein, fecal calprotectin, and colonoscopy as clinically indicated.
Full eligibility criteria (from the record)
Inclusion Criteria: * Diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease for more than 2 months * Age 18 years or older * Undergoing endoscopy at enrollment for assessment of disease severity Exclusion Criteria: * Pregnancy * Unstable underlying medical conditions * Inflammatory bowel disease limited to the distal rectum (within 10 cm of the anal verge) or perianal disease only * Biologic failure
